Coming up this week - DNF Expert Group Meeting
The DNF Expert Group is in final preparations for its next meeting taking place this week on 1st July. The meeting will be hosted by Defra, a DNF Expert Group member organisation, using its Innovation Centre in Reading as the venue. The meeting agenda is a busy one but the focus will be around the evolution of DNF to ensure that it remains relevant to the fast-paced changes in the location information landscape. Specifically this will look at the role that DNF has to play in support of two key initiatives in spatial information management and wider access to public data.
The meeting will kick off with a technical update featuring two presentations. The first is a technical guide to INSPIRE Schema Transformation. The second is an update on the latest developments of the UK Location Programme and data.gov.uk.
The first is in the role that DNF plays in support of the UK Location Strategy and INSPIRE. The DNF Expert Group is already linked into the UK Location Programme via its membership of the Location Information Interoperability Board (LIIB). The second is how the the work supported by DNF can benefit from the emergence of Linked Data. Both are examples of the ways in which DNF can both support wider industry and technological initiatives but also bring to bear its years of relevance and experience to these initiatives.
If you are an Expert Group member then please make sure you are registered to attend. This is done through this website for all registered users. And if you are not a registered Expert Group member but would like to attend then please contact the DNF Expert Group (contact@dnf.org ). There is no fee to become an Expert Group member.
The Expert Group will publish a short summary of this meeting within a week of the event. Full minutes from the meeting will be circulated later to the Expert Group members.

Forthcoming BCS Geospatial event, March 4th
The British Computer Society (BCS) Geospatial Specialist Group, hosts of the this week's DNF Expert Group meeting, will be running a seminar event next week that we thought you might be interested in. "Time, Space & Meaning - a seminar on Geospatial semantics" takes place on March 4th. The venue is the conveniently located BCS offices in London, a short stroll from Charing Cross Station. The three hour seminar will feature, as part of a packed agenda, sessions on Linked Data and the recently launched data.gov.uk public data website - which both also featured as topics of interest at this week's Expert Group meeting.
You will need to register for the event via the BCS website and not on the DNF website. A full agenda and registration link can be found here

Ordnance Survey announces Terra future™ 2010 event
This special Terra future™ seminar aims to bring the two communities together: to inform the GI community about the power of linked data, to inform the linked data community about the power of GI, and, most importantly, to forge linksbetween the two communities. If linked data is about modern ways to interconnect information, and if part of the power of GI lies in enabling data to be linked, then Terra future is about creating links between communities.
The event runs on 10 March 2010 at the Business Centre at OS Headquarters in Southampton. Details on the event, full agenda and how to register can be found in the PDF below.

Latest DNF Expert Group Meeting
In light of the need to better align work of the DNF EG with that of the UK Location Programme, the DNF Management Team called an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of the Expert Group. The meeting was hosted by BGS in Keyworth andf set out to align the workplan of the DNF Expert Group for the next six months. DNF focus was placed on cross referencing as an area of knowledge leadership and one that remains fundamental to the existing needs of organisations to share their location related information. Taking a longer term view, DNF will collaborate with other groups on the subject of Linked Data. More news to follow in the published output from the meeting.

DNF passes 10 year anniversary
The term "Digital National Framework" first appeared in 1999 making it recently 10 years old. During that time it has matured and evolved from its origins in Ordnance Survey into what we now know of as DNF - a widely supported data sharing and integration initiative spanning both government and commercial sectors. As part of its evolution DNF underwent a review of its core definition and its vision. These are reflected in the latest "What is DNF?" page. Also, the emergence of the UK Location Programme, the driving force behind the UK Location Strategy and the implementation of the EU INSPIRE Directive within the UK, has enabled closer alignment between DNF aims and the workplan of the UK Location Programme.
